From RN to MD: International Medical School Begins

AUGUST 16, 2018

Where am I now? What happened to the blog? For those who were ready to follow along, you may have noticed a few things slipped through the cracks. But don’t worry (as my close friends and family can assure you) I have been busy! Since the inception of this blog, my wife and I have successfully circumnavigated the globe, and I’ve gathered a wealth of information.

Our initial plan had us travelling through 16 different countries, of which we successfully made it to 15. Utilizing every possible form of transportation, we wound our way home from New Zealand through Southeast Asia and across the Baltics in Europe, before ultimately flying home from London to San Francisco. Many memories were made, challenges overcome, and most importantly: lessons learned. While the speed at which we were travelling and unreliable wifi ensured I was never able to upload the content I had intended, it meant I had the opportunity to be fully immersed in our travels and can now share from personal experience.

By now, you may have noticed that the site no longer contains any more “coming soon” pages. If you haven’t, no worries, there is plenty to check out! Travel products are posted (with recommendations coming from personal use), destination specific health guides are emerging (with more to come), “Faces of Healthcare” survey responses are coming in, and the blog is back up and running. So stay tuned for more posts on the way.

As for me, where in the world am I now? What’s next?

It’s not the USA if that’s what you were thinking. I’m writing to you from Grenada, and no, it’s not in Spain (that’s Granada). Grenada is a country consisting of 3 small islands in the southeastern Caribbean. Known as the “isle of spice”, Grenada produces 40% of the world’s nutmeg, and is known for its lush landscape and beautiful beaches. But those are all just a bonus for me, as I’m here in Grenada to attend medical school at St. George’s University.

It has now been 4 years since I decided medical school was the right direction for me. A couple years of prerequisite classes and 2 years of travelling later, it has finally arrived. As a Registered Nurse, it seems quite peculiar to be going back to school knowing that even though I am working in the same general health field, this will be a whole new career shift for me. Plenty of study hours await and many tests are on the horizon. Regardless, I am excited to begin this new journey and have intentionally chosen to study at an international school - surrounded by all sorts of students from different countries and different walks of life.

Not only will I be learning about medicine, but I’ll have to opportunity to get a global focus and learn more about health abroad: bringing you that information here on the blog. So check out the new content under Destinations and Travel Products, and follow along for more to come.

Come along for the ride!
