Hey! I'm Jared...
Have you ever had questions about how to stay healthy while travelling?
Wondered what health issues you might run into, or how the healthcare system works in a different country?
Perhaps you are looking to engage in healthcare abroad, but don't know where to start?
Then you have the same questions as me and you're in the right place! I'm a medical professional who has caught the travel bug, and now I'm on a journey to learn about health in other countries and answer any questions I encounter along the way - so feel free to ask them!
Moving from South Africa to the United States of America at a young age, I grew up in a multicultural home. This exposed me to how different things can be in other countries, and peaked my interest in travel. But as I started down my path into healthcare, I resigned travel to only being vacation.
Graduating with my nursing degree in 2012, I began working at a large hospital in the area. During this time, I realized that I wanted to go to medical school and began completing the prerequisites. As my classes finished and I got ready to apply, I hesitated. I still wanted to travel! More than that - I wanted to see a different healthcare system, a different culture, and a different way of life.
So my wife and I decided to spend a year working in New Zealand. We started saving and I began the journey of getting my New Zealand nursing license - read about the process here. A year later we landed in Auckland on our second wedding anniversary, June 2016.
Fast forward since then, I have learned a lot! Our year in New Zealand fueled my desire to learn and travel, leading my wife and I to travel the long way home, circumnavigating the globe through 13 countries. I have seen the pros and cons of a different healthcare system and my view of health has changed. I have developed a desire to find better health practices, becoming increasingly aware of our need for them. Now I'm on a journey to learn more about health globally as I study medicine at St. George’s University, an international medical school based in Grenada.
Migrant
(n.) a person who moves from one place to another, especially in order to find work or better living conditions
Medic
(n.) a medical practitioner or student
Technology and travel have created a global economy of health we can participate in. I aim to be a medical professional participating beyond the boundaries of my home country. I am learning about health on the ground, through international study and travel - providing a resource for you to improve your own health along the way.
I seek to question: "how can we apply what we learn about health globally, to create better health locally?"
