Travel Insurance

Have peace of mind wherever you go

Having spent a long time planning, booking flights, finding accommodation, and taking leave from work, you have often invested a lot in your travels. So many people purchase trip insurance to protect them should anything go wrong. But does this include health coverage? Most of the time the answer the answer is no!

While your trip insurance may cover lost baggage or even missed flights, it may not cover any medical expenses you could incur abroad. No one wants to injure themselves or get into an accident overseas, only to find themselves with a large medical bill (we know how expensive those can be). Mistakenly, many assume that the health insurance they have at home will cover them. But as the inside of my passport politely reminds me, this is not the case.

But fear not! That’s where travel health insurance comes in, and the good news is that it’s affordable. In fact most travel health insurance plans cost only a few dollars day. So make sure you’re covered - it’s not worth the risk!

WHAT COVERAGE TO LOOK FOR IN A PLAN

Unexpected medical expenses, including emergency accident or sickness costs: to cover any general illness or accident you may have.

Emergency evacuation (both medical and non-medical) and repatriation of remains: important if a medical situation requires treatment in your home country, or some factor (such as a natural disaster) prompts evacuation.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D): so you’re covered for the worst.

Hospital advancement: to cover immediate costs and prevent treatment delay

Emergent dental treatment: oral needs are often forgotten but important!

Travel assistance services: ideally with 24 hour availability to help you locate and access medical services and coordinate plan implementation

Additionally, many travel insurance plans will include some coverage for trip cancellation, interruption, and personal effects/baggage. This means that you can often get by purchasing a single plan, rather than separate trip coverage and health coverage.

I personally recommend and have my travel insurance through World Nomads, with a plan that covers both trip cancellation as well as health coverage, with 24 hour assistance - costing me only $2 a day! While rates may vary based on age, length of travel, and coverage limits, plans rarely cost much, so you don’t have much to lose.

So before you go on your next trip, take your health into account and make sure you have a travel insurance plan that protects you wherever you go.
